The Royal Premier Golf League 2019 kick-started recently on the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) grounds. This is the biggest amateur golf tournament in the country and 532 golfers divided into 28 teams are taking part. The tournament, which began on Friday, will be played till March during the weekends. Each day, six teams will play each other.
According to Sudipta Goswami, a golfer and member of the rules committee of the tournament, RPGL is not only the biggest amateur golf tournament in the country, but they haven’t found a bigger tournament in the world.
“Four years ago, our former club captain started this tournament. The whole idea was to make all the club members meet each other. Within the first year itself, the competition became a huge success,” he added. “During the tournament, players fight tooth and nail. Two team owners may have a heated argument with each other. But after the match, they are the best of friends. This was the main reason why RPGL was started,” said present club captain Ashish Doshi.
Aditya Khaitan, the owner of team Avengers, said that each year the competition is different and that’s what makes it interesting. “The rising standard of the tournament keeps our enthusiasm alive,” he added.
