Four female Kolkata artist bring their work to audience

Four contemporary Kolkata-based artists –

– put their artworks forward at a newly opened gallery at Alipore. Curated by

Adwait Singh

, the exhibition, When The Other Stares Back, began on March 26.

Talking about her artwork, Sonia said, “My inspiration for this particular show is microorganisms. I feel these are such important components of our ecosystems but they cannot be seen with the naked eye.” Meanwhile, Suhashini’s work is taken from a series. “My work here at the exhibition is taken from the series Everyday Extraordinary which is based on my documentation of everyday life from the chor bazaar of Bombay and Chitpur in Kolkata between 2015 and 2020,” she said.

“It always feels wonderful to be here in Kolkata,” said the curator. “The process for me has really been promising and fruitful primarily because people who are involved with this new art gallery are absolutely hospitable. For me, curation started sort of formally when I came back to India after finishing my masters and started working on the students biennale. I also started curating shows as a freelancer and it is something I have continued throughout my practice. So the experience has been great so far, it's been very rewarding,” he added.
