City gears up to celebrate 50th year of Vijay Diwas

-- the 50th year of India’s victory over Pakistan in the War of 1971 for the liberation of Bangladesh -- which started in September is all set to culminate with a gala on the Vijay Diwas, December 16, at Victoria Memorial. The event will feature a host of cultural icons, including Gulzar, Kavita Krishnamurthy, L Subramanyam and others.


The event will also see a light and sound show depicting the history of the victorious war in 1971. In tribute section, Gulzar will read out his poem to pay homage to the Indian Armed force. Besides, there will be a musical piece directed by Sourendro Mullick and Soumyojit Das.
The musical,

Swarnim Vijay Gatha

, will feature Papon, Kavita Krishnamurthy, L Subramanyam,

Ujjaini Mukherjee

, Durnibar Saha, Brinda Saikat and others. The piece will also feature almost 150 folk artistes from across Bengal.


“This is an absolute honour to be a part of the show. The co- curator of the show Rishabh Bapna reached out to us to direct the piece. The idea was to showcase the friendship of India and Bangladesh musically. Besides resorting to eternal classics, we also composed an original song that will kickstart the occasion,” said Sourendro.
