City artistes celebrate Cancer Survivor’s Day

Every year, millions of individuals are affected by cancer. In India too, the malady has been witnessing an alarming and steady increase. And to create awareness about prevention and early detection of the deadly malady, a city-based non-profit organisation, which inspires and fulfils the needs of the cancer survivors, organised a special cultural event on August 7.

The aim of the organisation, which was formed by some reputed city-based oncologists, is to promote awareness about cancer in the community by providing easy access to information about the disease. They also aim to offer an enhanced quality of treatment and an improved quality of life tothe survivors, their families and friends.

The event saw performances by veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee, Riddhi Bandyopadhyay and Devajit Bandyopadhyay along with a few cancer survivors. The curtain raiser of the event was a chorus,

Aguner Poroshmoni

, which was performed by cancer survivors. All those present applauded their performance.

This was followed by a dance drama, Songstress, directed by Devajit. Conceptualised by Riddhi, Songstress is a story that encompasses the lives of several iconic Bengali heroines like Binodini, Angurbala, Indubala, Kanan Debi, Chaya Debi, Sushila Sundori and Keya Chakraborty, who created their own identity through singing, dance and acting. , Devlina Kumar and Rubena Chatterjee performed the dance sequences. All those present showed their appreciation for the dance drama with a loud round of applause.
