Susmita Chatterjee, the founder-director of Kathak dance troupe ‘Stuti’, performed her solo production, Devi, at
Gyan Manch
recently. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of India’s Independence, she chose this piece as a narrative of struggle. Based on Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’sDevi
Chaudhurani, the production presented true events and characters from the pre-Independence era. Though the storyline is historical, the presentation dealt with contemporary issues like women’s empowerment and emancipation. Eminent dance gurus like Thankamani Kutti, Debjani Chaliha andPriti Patel
