Kolkata gears up pedal for change

Kolkata is preparing to take to the streets on two wheels this November as the city gets ready for its largest-ever Cycle Marathon. Scheduled for November 9, the event is expected to attract over 3,000 participants and aims to promote fitness, sustainability, and community engagement.

The Cycle Marathon will cater to riders of all levels, with multiple categories including 70 km, 50 km, 25 km, and 10 km routes. A 5 km fun run will also be organised for those without cycles.

The event is being framed as more than a competition, encouraging citizens to embrace cycling as a part of everyday life. Local and national initiatives supporting active and sustainable lifestyles have provided momentum, and the marathon aims to position Kolkata as a cycling-friendly city.

The ride builds on a growing weekend cycling culture in the city, which has seen hundreds taking part in Sunday rides in recent months. Safety remains a priority, with helmets, lights, and reflectors mandatory. Medical and technical teams will be stationed along the routes, and participants will have access to hydration, post-ride refreshments, and medals. Police support will ensure smooth traffic management on the day of the event.

The Cycle Marathon seeks to highlight the benefits of cycling for health, environment, and community, turning a day on the road into a step toward a cleaner, more connected city.
