Kolkata Metro: Powering a greener tomorrow
Kolkata's Metro Railway, often called the city's Lifeline, is making significant strides towards sustainability. For over 40 years, it has not only connected the city but is now playing a crucial role in reducing carbon footprints by harnessing renewable energy. This initiative has gained momentum, especially with the government's PM Surya Ghar Scheme and the Indian Railways' ambitious target to become a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030. Currently, Metro Railway boasts a total solar power capacity of 4.556 MWp across various service buildings and carsheds. In April 2025 alone, the Metro Railway generated an impressive 47.21 thousand units of electricity from solar power. This solar power generation system is efficiently monitored through a cloud-based system. Presently, the Metro Railway produces an annual average of 57 lakh units of solar energy, leading to a significant reduction of 49 lakh tons of carbon footprints each year.
The upcoming projects alone are expected to generate 14500 KWp of electricity to meet their demand. Currently, the Metro Railway generates an average of 16,000 units of solar power daily. Once all these new solar power plants are installed, this daily generation capacity is projected to surge to an astounding 110,000 units. Kolkata Metro is clearly committed to achieving its milestone for reducing carbon emissions, paving the way for a cleaner, better tomorrow.
