With Dhanteras and the wedding season approaching, Kolkata shoppers are favouring traditional heavy jewellery – a trend that persists despite rising gold prices. CT speaks with owners and stakeholders to find out what’s new and who is buying what.

Versatile pieces with vintage designs the top picks
Keeping in mind the fast-changing trends, patrons are looking for designs that can be paired with any outfit, and worn on various occasions. “Consumers are favouring versatile jewellery pieces, blending minimalism with traditional elements. Vintage and heritage-inspired designs, such as floral and nature motifs, are particularly trending in earrings and bangles,” shares Abhishek Kajaria, owner of Avama Jewellers.

Traditional statement pieces remain the crowd favourite despite the price rise
City residents are increasingly inclined towards purchasing heavy traditional jewellery. “This year, it’s about making a statement with bold and vintage pieces featuring vibrant colours and intricate designs,” says Vijay Kumar Soni, director of Mahabir Danwar Jewellers. Echoing his sentiments, Pratik Dugar, director of Indian Gem and Jewellery Creation, adds, “Considering the wedding season, the demand for heavy jewellery is quite high.” A notable trend indicates that the demand for gold jewellery increases, with price rise. Ramesh Kalyanaraman, executive director of Kalyan Jewellers, explains, “The rising prices boost consumer confidence as a long-term investment.”

Many buyers are also opting for light, affordable jewellery for everyday use

More than viewing it as an investment, celebs have convinced men that they can wear some gold too. Consequently, demand for gold jewellery in the men’s category has surged. “Men are buying gold now more than ever. From gold chains and bracelets to diamond rings, kadas, and ear studs, they are making fashion statements with gold and splurging on these pieces,” says Annargha Uuttiya Chowdhuury of Anjali Jewellers.
