Traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary design in Abhishek Dutta’s work.
Blending traditional embroidery with futuristic cuts, he has carved a distinct space in Indian fashion through experimentation and a deep connection to Kolkata. From resort to swimwear, his designs have earned him national attention, positioning him as a changemaker.
From resilience to global recognitionMy journey has been long and, at times, uncertain. Coming from a middle-class background and raised by a single parent, I lacked financial support to launch my label. Early collaborations did not work out, but I persisted—starting with a small garage unit with three machines and building steadily. That determination opened doors to international fashion weeks. I’ve learned to evolve constantly while staying true to my vision. Kolkata, though challenging, has been deeply supportive, pushing me creatively.
‘Kolkata is my best runway’My design philosophy lies in juxtaposition – blending traditional embroidery with contemporary, often futuristic cuts. I enjoy contrasts, like pairing a sari with Kashmiri crochet or leather. I work with handloom, natural fabrics, and asymmetrical silhouettes. Kolkata’s contrasts shape my collections. I’ve showcased at the Indian Museum, Railway Museum, Park Mansion, and even on a barge; presenting at Victoria Memorial remains on my wishlist.
My focus is on comfort, confidence, and authenticity. With artisans I’ve worked with for decades, I aim to build a lasting global legacy
