#OnamSpecial / Magician Gopinath Muthukad and his special wards enjoy a fun Onam

Magician Gopinath Muthukad and 200 special children, along with their parents, had a grandOnam celebration recently, with athapoo, sadya cultural programmes and the usual festival games, like tug-of-war and musical chair. “Festivals, such as Onam, give differently-abled children the chance to come out of their shells. So, we go all out and have a day-long celebration to give them a good time,” says Muthukad, who has now retired from professional magic and now dedicates his time to the children.

His centre, set over 5 acres in Thiruvananthapuram, aims to develop the children’s mental skills through magic, music, art and cinema. In fact, during a recent programme in Delhi, they met President Droupadi Murmu, and they have received an invitation to perform at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan.

“For Onam, the children turned up in festival costumes and finery, as did their parents. We had a joyous celebration,” says Muthukad.
