Kerala Piravi is a reminder of who we are as a people, says violinist Manoj George
On Kerala Piravi, violinist and composer Manoj George reflects on the spirit of the land that shaped him as an artiste. “Kerala Piravi is a special day for every Malayali. It reminds us of our shared roots and the cultural legacy we carry. As someone who’s travelled and performed across the world, I’ve realised that no matter where I go, my foundation in Indian — and especially Kerala’s — music remains strong,” says the artiste whose latest track Shobhitham Keralam, released by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is an “artistic salute to my homeland and the soil that shaped me as an artiste”.
'Every art form here tells a story of emotion, nature, and devotion'
Known for blending Indian classical with global sounds, Manoj tells us he often draws inspiration from the art forms that define Kerala’s cultural fabric — from Mohiniyattam and Chenda Melam to Kalaripayattu. “These traditions are not just performances; they’re reflections of who we are as a people — resilient, expressive, and deeply connected to the soil,” he shares. He adds that Kerala’s artistic diversity continues to influence his creative process. “Every art form here tells a story of emotion, nature, and devotion. That’s what makes Kerala unique. It’s a place where rhythm, melody, and spirituality coexist beautifully.”

"Kerala Piravi is a special day for every Malayali," says Manoj, and as he looks ahead, he hopes more young musicians draw from their roots even as they experiment with modern sounds. “Change is inevitable, but our essence shouldn’t be lost. Kerala’s culture has survived and thrived for centuries because it adapts while staying true to itself. For me, Kerala Piravi is a day to pause and remember that, and to celebrate the land, the people, and the music that make us who we are.”

The musician notes that Shobhitham Keralam had been in the making for a long time. “I had this tune in my mind years ago. We performed it live as a band before I decided to record it properly. Over time, it evolved into a full-fledged tribute piece. It’s something very close to my heart,” he shares. Talking about Mohanlal’s association with the song, he adds, “I was in Kochi a few days ago when Mohanlal sir agreed to launch the song. He really liked it and said he was happy to be part of something that celebrates Kerala’s spirit.” “The track is my way of saying thank you to Kerala — for its beauty, its art, and its soul,” he adds.
