On the walls were framed ‘faces’ sketched in charcoal. The art gallery, Suryakanti, at Sasthamangalam, Thiruvananthapuram recently saw the exhibition of charcoal works by veteran artist BD Dethan, titled Faces. The frames communicated various facial expressions except happy faces. The charcoal images touched upon violence, tremors and pains of the people in the country, a portrayal of the sadness in contemporary society.
Interestingly, the collection is not a new series, but something the artist had painted in the 1980s. The exhibition was inaugurated by writer Perumpadavan Sreedharan. We also spotted veteran artist Katoor Narayana Pillai, Babu Jacob, Lizzie Jacob and Nemom Pushparaj.
