, former president of Afghanistan, was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony held in the presence of
Indranil Manna
, the director of IIT Kanpur. Karzai, who was on his first visit to Kanpur was impressed by the city and said, “I’m happy to be here in Kanpur. I thank all of you for inviting me to your city. Friendship between India and Afghanistan is very deep rooted and you can find this friendship in every household. While people of my generation have been huge fans of Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangehskar, the younger generation loves Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.”
“We should strive to maintain good contact between the two countries via Pakistan and only then can both nations progress,” he said, adding, “We Afghanistanis want the prosperity and development of India and if at all we fail to do it politically, I am sure that you engineers can do it scientifically,” he told the students who filled the auditorium to capacity. Also present for the inauguration were Dr Sudhir Kamle, Dr Shahid Mohammad Abdali and Dr AR Harish.
