India is set to launch its inaugural professional basketball league in collaboration with the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), featuring both men's and women's teams in 5x5 and 3x3 formats. This pan-India league aims to establish a structured career path for athletes, supported by athlete scouting, coaching infrastructure, and grassroots development initiatives.

India will soon have its first professional basketball league, marking a significant shift in how the sport is organised and played in the country. Launched in association with the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), the league will feature both men’s and women’s teams competing in 5x5 and 3x3 formats.This is the first time a structured, pan-India league has been introduced for basketball, aiming to offer athletes a clear career pathway within the sport. A long-term ecosystem is being planned, which includes athlete scouting, coaching infrastructure, and grassroots development initiatives.The league will be overseen by a League Council and supported by international experts. Jeremy Loeliger, former CEO and commissioner of Australia’s NBL, has been appointed to lead the project’s development.In addition to the competition format, a residential high-performance centre is also expected to launch later this year. Plans include full-time training for players, coaches, and referees, with emphasis on nutrition, education, and mental wellness.Further details on team structures, formats, and participation are expected to be announced in phases in the coming months.
