The vibe was Punjabi and the mood electrifying on the closing night of the Times Hyderabad Festival on Sunday at the majestic Quli Qutub Shahi Tombs, where singer Jasbir Jassi got everyone grooving to the balle balle routine.
The singer opened the show with some Sufi renditions of poet Bulleh Shah’s works and soon upped the tempo with an eclectic mix of popular Bollywood compositions, Punjabi pop and folk numbers like “Laungda Lashkara”, “Channa Ve Teri Channani”, “Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujrat Di”, “Channo Da Kudi Kudi”, “Toka”, “Munni Badnam Hui”.

The singer just seemed to know the pulse of the audience and kept improvising throughout the show to keep the crowd going. The audiences hooted the loudest when he decided to croon the song of the moment, “Kolaveri Di”, but with a Punjabi twist!
Jassi even decided to pay homage to the cinema icon Dev Anand, who passed away on Saturday, by singing the actor’s classic crowd favorites like “Dum Maaro Dum” from the cult film “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”, much to everyone’s delight. He made sure the older members of the audiences were kept entertained by singing some oldies like “Reshmi Kurta Salwar Jalidar”, “Ude Jab Jab Zulfe Teri”, “Mere Piya Ghar Aaya”, “Khaike Paan Banaras Wala” and other tracks.
In true showman style, the singer kept the audiences engaged with his wisecracks. Jassi was constantly interacting with the crowd... he spotted someone from the audience on the phone and asked him if he would like the volume to be turned down! He applauded the crowd for their dancing skills and singled out some ladies to pay compliments. It obviously worked — by the end of the show, all the seats were empty and every one was up on their feet. It was truly a fitting finale to the nine-day long cultural festival. The hospitality partner of the event was Aditya Sarovar Premiere.
