Thanks to Cyclone Phethai, Hyderabad witnessed an unprecedented dip in temperatures in the last few days. In fact, this is the coldest December has been in several years, say weather experts. As the biting cold gales and incessant drizzle made it seem like you were in a hill station. As the mercury plummeted to a new low of 7o C on December 17 and 18, Hyderabadis pulled out their sweaters, mufflers, scarves, jackets, monkey caps and hoodies.
The sun stayed hidden behind dark clouds,
forcing city folk to walk the streets with their hands stuffed in their pockets to keep themselves warm.
Those who commute on bikes were the worst hit, as they had to brave the misty roads and chilly winds. It wasn’t uncommon to see them clad in woollens from head to toe, leaving only their eyes uncovered. The upside though was that the inclement weather compelled the bikers to wear helmets, to keep the winds off their ears, if nothing else.
In a city like ours where gloves and mittens are hardly needed, keeping freezing hands warm posed a challenge. Little ones cut an adorable picture as they went to school in oversized sweaters, with sleeves hanging well below their fingers, which were clenched tightly. Social media meanwhile was abuzz with netizens expressing astonishment at the sudden change in weather. And in no time, several memes featuring veteran comedian Brahmanandam started doing the rounds. Some even credited
Telangana CM KCR for the chilly weather conditions in the city. “Looks like KCR garu has already started delivering his promises. Koti is feeling like Ooty (sic),” a twitter user commented. “KCR garu ni gelipinchamo ledo.... KTR garu Working president ga padhavi svikarincharo ledo, Hyderabad motham central AC petticharu ga (with KCR’s victory and KTR taking charge as working president as party, looks like they have installed central AC in the whole of Hyderabad) added another user.
With the sun coming out finally and temperatures normalising, it looks like the worst of the winter is behind us. but hey, at least we got to wear those hoodies!
