Bhavana Reddy's performance at Cyber City Convention in Hyderabad
When Bhavana Reddy comes on stage in her Kuchipudi ensemble, exuding grace in her every move and dancing to one of the compositions of Pandit Ravi Shankar, you can’t see her doing anything else, except this traditional dance. Surprise, surprise, she dances just as gracefully to George Harrison’s Oh My Lord! When you think this is all there is to her, she gets on stage and metamorphoses into a singer — clad in a golden top, that seems to be a fusion between a crop top and choli, and dhoti pants, singing Indie rock tunes, you can’t see her doing anything else; she fits in so perfectly.

Titled ‘Faces’, this event was a one-of-its-kind — where Kuchipudi and Carnatic music shared the same stage as Indie rock; where ghatam and drums belted out the same beats and the flute and keyboard churned out the same tunes. After Bhavana sang some of her compositions, like She, Why Do We Love, Smells Like Rain and Tangled in Emotions, she went on to croon Carnatic notes. During this time, she was joined in by her mother, Kaushalya Reddy, with whom the mridangam player, the percussionist and the drummer joined in for a jugalbandi. After this goosebump-inducing performance, Bhavana topped it off with dancing on a plate — something, she shared, that was “customary to end Kuchipudi with. This when you become one with God.”
