As city loses its green cover rapidly, youngsters demand climate action

There is a green massacre happening in the city and we are here to raise our voice against that,” said 9-year old Shruti, emphatically, as the 100-odd young protesters at near Tankbund raised slogans demanding climate action.

The group, comprising school students and green activists gathered at Ambedkar statue as part of the worldwide Global Climate Strike, started by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, which has seen millions of students take to the streets, demanding climate action in various parts of the world. The young Hyderabadis were clear about their demands: The CMO should looks into the rampant

deforestation

in and around the city, they said. “I suffer from

asthma

and the high pollution levels are making life difficult for me. People are not aware how harmful the cutting down of trees is for us, the climate and the world,” said Harsha, a young activist.

Mallikarjun, a 16 year old student of St. Andrews School, added, “Climate emergency needs to be a part of the government’s manifesto, only then will a real change come. We hope action is taken immediately.”
