Although Mad Max is one of the biggest hits of the summer, very few people realise that the story is supposed to be set in a dystopian Australia, and that it’s an Australian franchise. This fact, however, didn’t escape the Aussies at this event, where McGrath told us, “People don’t realise that Mad Max is set in Australia. I haven’t seen the newest movie, but they were going to film that in Australia – in Broken Hill, where it’s all dry and a desert.
But the area had too much rain around that time and everything went green, so it defeated the purpose of the movie, I guess. Mad Max 3 with Mel Gibson was filmed in Australia, though. It’s funny that an Australian actor’s never played Max, but we’ve got a lot of great actors – Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett – and a lot of great movies coming from there, so it’s all good.”
Added Patrick Suckling, “In many ways, Mad Max is all about the pioneering spirit of the Australian people. It shows the different geographies of the country and its somewhat harsh landscape. The people, however, worked to tame the desert and make it liveable. They conquered the different terrains and turned it into what it is today. So it’s a testimony to overcoming odds and obstacles – in the movie, it’s a bit extreme – but it’s the way of the Australian people.”
