Students participate in a Mangrove plantation at Chicalim

St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim in association with Nisarga Nature Club, Chicalim Youth Farmers Club, Goencho Ekvott with the support of Department of Forest, Govt of Goa; Diocesan commission for Ecology; Goa State Biodiversity Board ICAR-CCARI, Old Goa; BMC chicalim organised Mangrove Plantation drive at Vareg Island, Chicalim on the theme “COME LET’S MAN-GROOVE’ a year long mangrove restoration project (3rd cycle) the plantation drive started off on June 7, 2023 at the sunrise.

Altogether a total of 30 voluteers had volunteered for the plantation drive. Two mangrove species of Rhizophora mucronata (around 750 propagules) and Kandelia candel(nearly 250 plantlets) which show tolerance to high salinity were planted on the scenic island. The activity was aimed at restoring, reviving and rivitalising mangroves at Vareg Island, Chicalim. Dr Fr Bolmax Pereira, Assistant Prof, Departement of Botany of the St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim and the coordinator of this project welcomed all the volunteers for the 3rd cycle of the plantation drive and thanked everyone for actively volunteering in the drive. As our contribution towards UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration declared in 2021 let us engage ourselves in restoration of Mangrove ecosystem in coastal Goa to mitigate climate change and protect ourselves from constantly rising sea level.
