Students miss buzz of college events in December

With

classes

being held online,

students

are not just missing their classmates and teachers, but also the

extracurricular activities

that are held throughout the year. Most of these

cultural events

were organised in December, coinciding with the festive season. But they have been called off this year due to the pandemic.

Events have taught us responsibility: StudentsFrom getting sponsors to décor, to hosting a better show than the previous year’s, students enjoyed the

experience

of organising an event. “There was a sense of responsibility involved, as I had to take care of the participants coming in, monitor all the activities, provide good hospitality and manage finances,” says Sanjeevani Singh, final year, mass communication, St Xavier’s College, Mapusa. Carmen Miranda, a second year, science student of Carmel College, Nuvem, tells us that she misses practising for competitions. “All we looked forward to was to win. With online classes, everything is digital, so even if there are competitions, we have to use apps, whereas in college we would get together and brainstorm for ideas.”

A great way to make new friends
For Mavil Maulingkar, of Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Miramar, college events made life interesting. He says, “It was a learning experience from these events and we used to get attendance too so it's a win-win situation.” Anushka Sharma, final year student of Mass Communication at St Xavier’s College, says, “We would get to meet people from different fields. It is also a great learning experience as you compete with peers with different abilities.”
Never got to experience college events: first-year studentsThose who are attending college online have not experienced how events are held. “I always heard my cousins talk about competitions and events and I also wanted to be a part of it. I really hope that things get better and colleges have events like they used to,” says Kezia Fernandes, first year, Chowgule College, Margao.
