Songs, slogans mark protest against Trans Bill in Panaji

A peaceful protest unfolded in Panaji on Sunday, as over 200 people from diverse backgrounds gathered at Azad Maidan to oppose the proposed Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 13 by Union Minister Dr Virendra Kumar, the Bill proposes replacing the self-identification right upheld in the 2014 NALSA judgment with mandatory medical certification, prompting widespread opposition. Protesters argue the amendment fails to protect trans persons and exploits vulnerabilities.

A COLLECTIVE STAND

Raising slogans like Amka Naka Trans Bill (We don’t want the Trans Bill), the gathering brought together transgender individuals, activists, allies, and families in a strong show of solidarity. A lively contrafactum of the popular song Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji from the film Ishqiya energised the crowd, with participants singing along Bill To Kaccha Hai Ji, Poora Kaccha Hai Ji… and distributing stickers to spread awareness.




Janice* (name changed), attending in support of her cousin, highlighted the importance of family backing. “I’m here to stand by him. Family support matters, and I’m proud of him,” she said.

CALL FOR GREATER AWARENESS

Many attendees stressed that while social awareness has improved in recent years, significant gaps remain. Hari, a marketing professional, warned the bill could deepen fear within the community. “Everyone has the right to live with dignity. This could push us backward,” he said.
