Konkani Despacito cross over four million views

The 2017 Spanish song Despacito, by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee has been creating waves - from people making music videos to many doing covers.

Singer Ester Noronha

and rapper Noel Sean, collaborated together and gave Despacito a new touch- the Konkani way. The video has crossed 4 million views on YouTube till date.

While we chat with Ester she tells us, “Despacito, in Spanish was a favourite and I listened to it several times every day. I liked everything about it, the lyrics, the music, the style of singing, the peppiness, the video, the way it all projected the nativity of their region. I also found it interesting how everyone accepted and loved it across the world. One day as I was listening to it on my way to a Kannada movie shoot in Bangalore, I suddenly realised I too could do a

similar thing

in Goa and in Konkani due to the similarities in culture, location and the way our words sound.” Though a Mangalorean, Goa has given her a lot. Ester has worked in Konkani films, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. She was seen in a tiatr ‘Goem Goemkar Goemkarponn’ by tiatrists Mariano Fernandes. She also sang a song for the Konkani film ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ "It's my small way of trying to give back and thank them."

“I have grown up speaking Konkani and still speak at home. That's the language my ancestors spoke and that's the language I'd want the future to proudly speak. I don't like how Konkan-kars are divided in the name of regions, slangs and accents. When I do something in Konkani, I don't care if it's Mangalorean, Goan, Maharastrian or so on. I make sure that the words can be understood by everyone, so that they can connect and come under one big roof called just ‘Konkani’ and not the region's name attached to it. I believe it's time for us to think and fly higher now. Many people, who listened to both versions, some said that the Konkani version was better than the original.” People even play this song at functions and events.
