From theatre to film: Om Shishir Pathak’s cinematic evolution
Indian-born cinematographer Om Shishir Pathak is rapidly becoming a dynamic creative force in the international film industry. Known for his emotionally compelling visuals and technical versatility, Om’s journey from theater stages in India to big-budget productions in Los Angeles is as inspiring as it is impressive.
Om’s artistic foundation was laid in theater, where he worked as an actor, writer, and director, honing his narrative instincts and creative voice. As he grew more fascinated by the visual language of storytelling, he shifted paths to pursue the art of photography, ultimately earning a bachelor’s degree in photography and journalism from Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth in Pune, a respected institution in India’s creative academic landscape.
He began his career as a photojournalist and commercial photographer, collaborating with major agencies and brands. His transition into filmmaking felt natural, as his eye for composition and lighting seamlessly translated into motion. Starting out as an assistant to some of India’s most celebrated cinematographers, Om quickly rose through the ranks, working on a variety of feature films, TV shows, music videos, and documentaries.
A significant turning point in Om’s journey came when he was tasked with making a deeply personal documentary about his late grandfather, Prabhakar Pathak. This project brought him to Los Angeles, where he enrolled at the New York Film Academy in Burbank, completing a professional certification in cinematography. Since then, he has firmly established himself in Hollywood as a Director of Photography (DP), Gaffer, and Colorist, bringing both emotional depth and technical excellence to every frame.
In addition to narrative work, Om has contributed to major commercial campaigns, including projects with well-known personalities such as NFL insider Jay Glazer, a public safety campaign for the U.S. Government's NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), and high-profile music and brand visuals for international electronic artist Deadmau5. These projects have demonstrated Om’s versatility and his ability to work at the highest level of production.
His feature film experience includes collaborations with global entertainment icons like Snoop Dogg and veteran actor Billy Zane, further cementing his reputation as a rising star in cinematography circles. Whether capturing the charisma of hip-hop royalty or creating atmospheric visuals for compelling narratives, Om’s work continues to resonate across audiences and genres.
Most recently, he served as Director of Photography on a Sony/Vevo music video for artists Jayo and Bryce Vine, shot across Los Angeles. He also took on dual roles as DP and Producer for his first big-budget music video directed by Gabriel Hostetler and again starring Bryce Vine. The project, set to release soon on all major platforms, showcases Om’s ability to translate energy, emotion, and aesthetic style into polished commercial content.
Looking ahead, Om is preparing to launch production on a documentary series titled Take The Plunge—an exploration of human transformation and resilience that reflects his personal passion for universal storytelling.
“These recent collaborations have only deepened my drive to create meaningful visual narratives,” Om said. “Whether it's a large-scale commercial, a music video, or a feature film, I always aim to connect with the audience emotionally and visually.”
With an ever-growing list of high-caliber collaborations and global projects, Om Shishir Pathak is not just following his dreams—he’s defining them, one frame at a time.
