Faith, family & hot cross buns: ‘Easter reminds us to enjoy life’s little moments’
Easter in Kolkata is a celebration steeped in warmth, where faith meets family in the most intimate ways. From time-honoured rituals to evolving traditions, the festival is marked by moments of prayer, indulgence and connection. We interacted with four Christian families across the city, capturing how they add their own unique rhythm to the celebration.
Easter in Sreeparna Mandal’s home has grown into a celebration layered with meaning, shaped by family, faith and the presence of her daughter. “Since my daughter Samaira’s birth, Easter has been very special for us,” she says. At its core, it’s about togetherness and devotion. “Easter is about bonding, praying together,” Sreeparna says. The culmination of Lent makes the celebration even more significant at home. “My daughter is a foodie, and giving up something for Lent is a task for her, but she does it beautifully,” Sreeparna shares, making the lunch that follows something they look forward to.
A celebration of gratitude
For Melissa Alford Naidu, Easter is as much about faith as it is about family and the small, meaningful gestures that bind them. “Easter reminds me of the biggest sacrifice that was made for us and helps me make little sacrifices of my own in any way that helps my family or friends,” she shares. Beyond the spiritual significance, the celebrations are steeped in warmth, nostalgia and indulgence. “It also means a lot of chocolate and family fun,” she adds. Some of her fondest memories go back to her late grandfather, who would lovingly prepare Easter lunch while trying to skip mass. “But his food was always the yummiest,” she recalls.
Fun treasure hunts and even an Easter cake
For Alice and Neville Koyithara, Easter is about the quiet, reassuring rhythm of togetherness – of gathering around the table, catching up, and simply enjoying each other’s company. However, when their children were younger, the day had a more animated, playful energy. “The biggest highlight used to be the treasure hunt,” Alice says, recalling how clues would be tucked away in the house & garden, leading to hidden treats and bursts of laughter. “At our house an Easter cake is also a thing,” she adds, referring to a cream-based cake that’s now a signature part of their festive spread.
A celebration of togethernessFor Jason Aaron, Easter is a time of reflection and togetherness, marked by rituals that anchor the day in both faith & family. “For us, Easter is about hope, fresh beginnings, and spending quality time together as a family. It’s a reminder to be grateful, enjoy the little moments, and celebrate love and togetherness,” Jason says. Central to his celebrations is the tradition of going to church with his mum and aunt. His fondest memories are from his childhood, when Easter meant bustling family gatherings with “more than 10 cousins from just my mom’s side” — all coming together to exchange gifts, and open Easter eggs with excitement.
It’s a big family affair that we never miss. My mother cooks traditional dishes, and we all gather, catch up and spend time together. My husband probably looks forward to the Easter lunch the most

Traditions have meaning only if they’re carried forward. It’s important that the younger generation understands what Easter stands for. Over time, what should remain with them is its essence
