Spotlight on Australian talent with Indian roots
The mashaals lining the green lawns of the Australian High Commission’s residence lent warmth to a crisp Delhi evening as Gig On The Green celebrated fresh sounds by Australian musicians of Indian origin. Greeting the audience with namaste and yumalundi (meaning hello and welcome in the Canberra’s indigenous people’s language), the Australian High Commissioner Philip Green said, “For us, music, good food and great company, a little bit of Australian wine, maybe even some whiskey is something to enjoy. I hope you all enjoy a night of relaxation, great music, and easy familiarity.”
‘People of Indian origin are making Australia greater'
Speaking about the evening, he said, “Tonight, we are celebrating the fact that we have a bountiful and fast-moving bilateral relationship between Australia and India. People of Indian origin in Australia, now more than a million people, are doing great things in our country, making Australia greater. It’s very special to us to present two great performers, two great Australians.”
Indie-folk musician and The Voice Australia (2024) winner Reuben De Melo performed as peacocks perched on the garden trees, almost adding their own notes to his 40-minute set. As an ode to his Goan roots, Reuben included a Konkani song in his set, titled Tambde Roza. "All my music is the voice for the voiceless, I want to encourage Delhi artists to write songs to tell everyday stories... I want to collaborate with artistes here, connect with my roots and make new music," he said.
R&B singer Milan Ring took over the stage, performing her song like The Sound Of Rain On Dust , on her first day in Delhi. “I wanted to play music that means a lot to me, and I just did that. I am inspired by Carnatic music and classical dance,” she said.
