The countdown begins: On a recent evening, a function was held at the British high commissioner’s residence to mark the start of the one-year countdown to the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
There high-profile celebration included India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist,
Abhinav Bindra, and Olympic medal aspirant, boxer MC Mary Kom. Deputy British high commissioner Julian Evans and director, British Council, Rob Lynes, presided over the do.
Said Bindra, “I was gifted a toy gun when I was seven by my parents. Since then, I developed an interest in guns. I wasn’t a talented athlete but had the dedication to be the best. Winning the gold medal in the Olympics was a lottery. I’m looking forward to the 2012 London Olympics and I’ll try my best to win another gold.”
