Madiba gets a bikers’ salute
The revving of bikes and the whoops of their riders marked the celebration of South Africa’s Nelson ‘Madiba’ Mandela’s 94th birthday in the capital recently.
A bike rally was flagged off from Vasant Vihar, which concluded at Gandhi Darshan, Rajghat, bearing the message of unity. Heedless of the heat and the humidity, the bikers enjoyed themselves and shouted ‘hip hip hurray’ during their ride.

One of the bikers, Mohit Ahuja, 25, said, “It’s such an auspicious day that we are unable to hold ourselves back. Even the heat cannot stop us today.” Amrik Dhillo, 46, said, “You can see the soaring spirits of these young guys. Even the seniors aren’t far behind.”
Mohinder and Puneet lead the cavalcade before it entered the venue. South African high commissioner Harris Majeke read out a few lines in praise of Mandela on the occasion.
