It’s festival time for Delhi University aaj kal, and Hindu College was also buzzing past few months with its festivities.First, it was the annual fest, Mecca 2011, that kicked off recently, and then, it was their annual Valentine’s Day ritual, performed by the freshers with much sincerity, followed by the college’s founder’s day celebrated in the presence of APJ Abdul Kalam.
If you missed the buzz, here’s a quick recap of all the action.
Day 1 of Mecca began with the principal Vinay K Srivastava inaugurating the fest, along with debut filmmaker Nalin Singh (who is a Hindu alumnus) and MP JP Aggarwal as the chief guests. It was followed by a stage play by Arvind Gaur, and also a Sufi night. When Nalin came on the stage, he said, “Long time ago, I used to sit there and enjoy my college days. I’m still very attached to Hindu, which is why I have decided to organize the screening of my first film “Dear Friend Hitler” at Hindu, ahead of its release.” Needless to say, Hinduites were excited to hear that. Also present were Anita Bishan, professor of physics and convenor of Mecca, hostel warden Chandrachur Singh, and Hanuman, captain of the college’s basketball team.
The band Underground Authority rocked the college crowd on the second day, and Daler Mehndi’s performance on Day 3 added the Punjabi touch to the fest. Mr and Miss Mecca competition on Day 4 saw the crowd cheering the participants on the stage in excitement. The four-day celebrations were summed up with a war of the DJs that went on till about 8pm and a vote of thanks by the college’s prime minister Neeraj Mann for the college principal, staff and all those who volunteered to help for the fest.
And on V-Day, all the freshers (just the guys, we mean) gathered to worship the college’s famous Virgin Tree – decorated with heart-shaped balloons and condoms – singing ‘Dam Dami Mai ki jai ho.’ The Dam Dami Mai this year was Sonakshi Sinha, whom the Hindu boys worshipped in hope of finding a girlfriend within 6 months and losing their virginity in a year – as is the myth attached to this puja. We hope their goddess of love blesses them!
So, what’s next after the puja?
Divyanshu Chaturvedi, Hindu’s organizing coordinator, says, “We’ll celebrate the college’s hostel night next month.” Did someone say life is a party when you’re in DU?
