Delhi’s Gaj Mahotsav celebrates elephants

World Elephant Day

, the

Gaj Mahotsav

was held in Delhi from August 12 to 15 at the IGNCA. The exhibition, organized by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and

Climate Change

(MoEFCC), boasted of 101

elephant

installations which represented the 101 elephant corridors of India. They were painted by artists from across India.
The exhibition was organised to change people’s perception towards animal

conservation

. It brought jumbos not just closer to people’s hearts, but to their social media accounts too as pose-click-post seemed to be their mantra at the exhibition. Thanks to the selfie-loving janta, the guards at the event kept blowing their whistles, appealing to people to not touch the artwork. But that did not deter Delhiites from posing with the magnificent gentle giants.

Manjari Ganguly, a college student, said, “This exhibition had elephants made of iron, wood, straw and other material. There were installations of jumbos who could fly and even those who could read a book, which was one of my favourite installations.”
