Aurangzeb cancelled by the organizers!
A play titled Aurangzeb, which was scheduled to be staged today in Delhi as part of the ongoing International Seminar on DaraShikoh, has been cancelled by the organizers.
The play’s director, KS Rajendran, got a mail on March 20 saying that due to the “extraordinary sensitivity” of the play’s subject matter, it is being cancelled. The mail by AtherFarouqui, the general secretary of AnjumanTaraqqi Urdu, reads, “From the platform of an organization like the Anjuman, the matter of your play gains extraordinary sensitivity, hence this decision.”
The play deals with ideological and religious differences between Aurangzeb and his brother Dara Shikoh.

Rajendran, who is a professor at NSD and has directed the play, says, “This play is an indirect criticism of contemporary history. Our play is different from what these organizers are assuming it to be. There have been no such issues earlier. The audience understands, but the organizers are not understanding the context of this play. I even went to the secretary to ask if there is any problem in any scene and told him that we’ll make changes accordingly. But we haven’t been told anything.”
Rajendran has been staging this play for the last six years at various venues. Rajendran adds, “It is unfortunate that we’ve been informed at the last moment. We are trying to stage it at some other venue on the same day. Auditoriums like Kamani are already full. So we are looking for other venues. I want the international delegates (historians from various places) to see my play. There is nothing so wrong about that play that it should be cancelled.” He adds, “In the last two months, this play has been staged eight times.”
