The Delhi Open concludes as it sets new milestone
The curtains have come down on the Delhi Open at the DDA Squash & Badminton Stadium, Siri Fort — and the tournament has cemented its place in history. With over 500 registered players, it officially became one of the biggest pickleball tournaments ever held in India.
Cricket icon and Dilli Dillwale co-owner Sunil Gavaskar captured the essence of the event, saying: “Delhi Open in Delhi promises to be the event to look forward to, to be a scene at, and to play. For the players, it’s a wonderful opportunity to not only showcase their skill, their talent, their discipline, their dedication, but also to make a name for themselves so that they can go higher up in the rankings with other pickleball tournaments.”
Adding her perspective, Ankiti Bose, co-owner of Dilli Dillwale, highlighted the demand driving pickleball’s meteoric rise: “The Delhi Open reflects the massive appetite for pickleball we’re witnessing in India. The growth is extraordinary, and with the right platforms like this, we’re creating pathways for talent, sponsorship, and international recognition.”
Dilli Dillwale’s role in the movement
The Delhi Open carried special significance for the capital’s own WPBL franchise, Dilli Dillwale. As co-owners and ambassadors of the sport, Gavaskar and Bose used the platform not only to support their team but also to nurture emerging talent. Several standout performers at the tournament are now expected to be scouted for potential inclusion in the team's programme — strengthening the link between grassroots growth and professional opportunities.
A tournament of firsts
The Delhi Open delivered on every front — professional draws that showcased India’s best, competitive amateur matches that brought communities together, and a 50+ category that underlined the sport’s inclusivity. For many, the tournament was more than competition; it was a launchpad towards higher rankings and future professional opportunities.
A defining moment for Pickleball in India
The event’s success has reinforced Delhi’s position as the hub of India’s pickleball movement. By breaking participation records and spotlighting Dilli Dillwale as the city’s representative team, the Delhi Open has shown that pickleball is no longer on the fringes — it has entered India’s national sporting spotlight.
As players, fans, and organisers bid farewell, one conclusion is clear: the Delhi Open was not just a tournament, but a turning point. It has set new benchmarks for the sport in India and laid the foundation for even bigger milestones in the years ahead.
