Culinary showcase flags off 250-year celebration of US independence
An evening that blended culinary curiosity with diplomatic intent, the Taste of America reception at a city hotel marked the launch of the US Consulate’s Freedom250 celebrations. Hosted by the US Consulate General in Kolkata, the gathering brought together the who’s who of the city’s food and hospitality ecosystem – from chefs and restaurateurs to importers, distributors, and content creators – creating a space where global ingredients met local imagination.– Sundas Jawed
A pantry without borders
At the centre of the evening was Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz’s introduction of the ‘American pantry’ – a curated showcase of premium US produce reimagined for contemporary global plates. From nuts and berries to poultry and pulses, the menu spotlighted the diversity and adaptability of American agricultural products, further enhanced by sauces from a Japanese food manufacturer’s US portfolio.
The event also saw participation from Hakuei Kosato and chef Doma Wang, underscoring how culinary exchange continues to act as a cultural bridge. Beyond the tasting tables, the evening doubled as a touchpoint for trade conversations. The US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service has been working with the US Consulate General in Kolkata to deepen market access and expand opportunities for American food products in eastern India.
With the city’s growing appetite for global flavours, the showcase went beyond ingredients to highlight possibilities – demonstrating how international sourcing can blend into Indian kitchens, from fine dining menus to experimental home cooking.
