The sights and sounds of magnificent Georgetown and the fragrance of jasmine flowers in the ever-traditional Mylapore were in resplendent display on Friday evening at Chennai, a bharatnatyam presentation by dancer Srinidhi Chidambaram. Adhering to the time-tested margam format, Srinidhi took the audience on a journey that took them from the magical ol’ Madras to the new bustling Chennai.
The highlight of the evening was her piece on the Cooum, which transported the people in the hall to the once-glorious river. Titled Chinnanchiru..., the number also focussed on the aberration that the river is at present. Another piece, titled Motherhood in a Metro, found appreciation from dance enthusiasts. The surprise guest of the evening was Home Minister P Chidambaram, who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the performance. Theatre artiste P C Ramakrishna introduced the dance pieces to the audience with ease and brilliance.
One of the lyrics rightly summed up the crux of the performance — Aayiram Uravundu Annaipol Varuma, Aayiram Oorundu Chennaipol varuma. Indeed, nothing beats Chennai!
