The pump house at Sukhna Lake, which had its entry point sealed with concertina wires, is now a lively and most-frequented spot. With the opening of an interpretation centre to mark Pierre Jeanneret’s 52nd death anniversary, the point, which had once gained notoriety for becoming a suicide point, is now in the mid of action.
After the restoration of the landmark structure, the interiors of the place was done up.
Now, it houses several rare photos, sketches with text highlighting lake's journey. Several senior officers and eminent architects of the city were also present on the occasion. Director Le Corbusier Centre Deepika Gandhi planned the concept and a formal presentation was given to Manoj Parida, adviser to the administrator, Chandigarh, some months ago. The cylindrical brick structure also talks about innovation and creativity of Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret as they turned it into a unique spot. It has a sculptural ramp to the roof equipped with natural light and ventilators.
With 30 photo panels showcasing the essence of the lake, it's turning out to be a learning experience for the visitors. It talks about various aspects from its creators to other lesser known components like the light fixtures and entrance gate. The idea behind the centre was to preserve city's heritage while sensitising visitors about Chandigarh's legacy.
