Diwali drive’ organised by Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) and NGO Yuvsatta, 1500 students took part.
While encouraging people to observe cracker-free Diwali was the main thought behind the campaign, the students discussed alternatives to celebrate the festival of lights. Using earthen lamps, green plants were few ideas floated to change the flavor of Diwali. Also, a street play ‘Green Diwali-Happy Diwali’ was staged on the occasion, followed by a green-quiz. TC Nautiyal, member secretary of CPCC said, “Metallic salts are used to produce light of different colours in the fire crackers. The use of harmful chemicals to bring out colourful pattern during the airbursts is dangerous for environment.” He also insisted on not using crackers and observe green Diwali.
