Cannes 2025: Peacock Royale — South Indian couture takes flight at the prestigious film festival

At the Cannes Film Festival, South Indian heritage met high fashion as Styling by Wow Vastra, the couture label by visionary designer Smrutha Santhosh, made a dazzling debut. Smrutha launched two statement ensembles that captivated the global fashion audience, seamlessly blending Indian tradition with international red-carpet flair.

The centrepiece of the collection was an extraordinary peacock-green lehenga saree — a striking fusion of South Indian craftsmanship and contemporary glamour — worn by British Indian singer and actress Rachanaa Jain. Featuring a dramatic six-metre saree train made from ethically sourced peacock feathers, the look paid tribute to divine femininity and cultural legacy.

The ensemble was a feat of artisan brilliance, including:
● 240 hours of handwoven Kanchivaram silk
● 250 hours of intricate Aari embroidery with peacock motifs
● 150 hours of precision feather artistry
● Antique temple jewellery engraved with goddess icons

“I didn’t want to make just a dress,” Smrutha shares. “I wanted to tell a story — one that honours our roots and envisions our future.”

The second ensemble, a purple Indo-Western skirt and frilled top embellished with crystals, offered a modern silhouette while retaining Indian aesthetics, showcasing her ability to innovate across design boundaries.

Beyond the red carpet, her impact is growing in cinema. She is the lead costume designer for Rachanaa Jain’s upcoming film, Bling Power, further expanding her influence on global style narratives.

For her own Cannes appearance, Smrutha wore a modern-draped Kanchivaram Ahimsa silk saree, blending sustainability, heritage, and empowerment in one bold statement.

But her mission extends beyond couture. She actively collaborates with women artisans, ensuring not just fair income but a sense of dignity and purpose. Through her personal styling services, she empowers clients to express individuality with confidence and cultural pride.
