The state government has announced to include the

transgender community

into the state’s monthly pension scheme of Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY). The social security and empowerment of persons with disability minister Ashok Panda made an announcement in this regard recently.

“The eligible transgenders will get a monthly pension of Rs 500 to Rs 900 in accordance with age. They have to apply through the MBPY website,” informed the minister. He said that following the inclusion of this community around 6,000 transgenders from the state would be benefitted through the scheme.

It’s noteworthy that the Odisha government had introduced

the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana

in 2008 to provide financial assistance to the destitute elderly and differently-abled persons in the state.

Though the amount is not big enough, but it would help in empowering the transgenders. “Since many of us are not accepted in work forces and people don’t provide work to our community people, it will help boost our morale and allow a respectful survival. This is the first step towards an inclusive society and it will slowly help our community people in becoming independent socially and economically,” said

Meghna Sahoo

, a transgender community member and first transgender cab driver.
