City’s
theatre
lovers got an opportunity to watch the
Odia
adaptation of the French play The Miser, written by seventeen century playwright and poet
Moliere
, on Wednesday evening. The play was staged by a city-based theatre group
Mukti
. They are the only organisation in the state that arranges paid shows for theatre lovers. Though sparsely filled,
Bhanjakala Mandap
saw frequent laugh riots as the Odia adaptation named
Gobardhan Oraf Gobarakampi
was a hilarious show.
The Odia adaptation is written by Zakir Khan while the play is directed by veteran theatre personality
Surya Mohanty. Odia cine and jatra actress
Usasi Mishra has played an important role in the 1 hour 15 minutes play. “We have performed this play at five other places till date. It has been a true adaptation and the way the audience expressed their love during the show and after it, shows their interest in watching such paid shows,” said the director.
The play talked about contemporary socio-political situations in the state and the country. It has several political commentaries used to add humour and satire while pointing a finger at the system. “Though the play was written in the seventeenth century
France
, its relevant even today in a far off place like the Odia community. That’s why people love to watch it,” said Usasi.
