National award-winning filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda’s first Odia feature film,

Kalira Atita

, (Yesterday’s Past) has been selected to be screened in the Indian Panorama section of

IFFI

2020. The 51st edition of

International Film Festival of India

(IFFI), Goa have been postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic. It’ll be held between January 16 and 24 next year.

Panda expressed his happiness and said, “This is my first Odia film and I’m happy that it will start its journey from this prestigious film festival. This is definitely good news for me for this year and I'm hopeful that it will bring many more good news for me in the coming years.”

He said that if prophecies are to be believed global warming and subsequent sea-level rise would result many coastal cities including Puri getting submerged. Even Achyutananda Das, a 16th century Odia saint, had written about the doomsday in his famous book

Achutananda Malika

. Panda’s Kalira Atita is inspired by this prophecy. The film’s story revolves around the life of a man from Odisha’s

Satavaya

village in Kendrapara district that has been swallowed by the rising sea level. Pitobash Tripathy plays the protagonist in this film.

Panda said that he has been shooting this film since 2005. “Climate change is harsh reality and people are losing their lives and livelihood because of it and my film tries to create awareness by showing the real picture from the ground level,’ he added.
