A group of travel enthusiasts went on a trail along the

Mahanadi

river valley recently to explore the heritage sites. They named their initiative

Aitiha

that was introduced to promote the heritage and culture through such trails. With more focus on lesser-known heritage sites away from Bhubaneswar mostly on the outskirts, the trail was much appreciated.

A total of 11 cultural and heritage enthusiasts participated in the one- of-its-kind event. Mahanadi River has been the source of activities and growth for Odisha and Odias for more than thousand years. It has been the centre of cultural assimilation and growth and the many heritage sites along its valley are witness to the rich history associated with it. Besides, there are beautiful natural spots, which also need attention from authorities and tourists. The participants visited the beautiful

Anshupa Lake

, and then went to Sarandagada, Tritiyadeba Deula, which is near Banki, Singhanatha in Gopinathpur Sasan and Padmeswar Temple in Baneswar Nasi. All these places are on Mahanadi valley in Cuttack district.

“The 141 hectre Ansupa Lake is a well-known place for all nature lovers and bird watchers. The fort at Saranda hill, popular for watching sunset, was built by Dhala dynasty of Banki. The ruins there include the entry gate, few wells and Baruda Ghara — the arms and ammunition store room. The 14th century Trutiyadeva Deula is said to be the exact replica of Puri’s Jagannath temple. The 9th century Singhanatha temple is peculiar for its location. It’s located on a hill inside the river, which remains inaccessible during peak monsoon season. Padmeswar temple, a picturesque hillock on the banks of Mahanadi, was once a major Buddhist establishment and was constructed around 10th-11th century,” said Taranisen Pattnaik, one of the organisers.

Interactive discussion among the participants sprung up every second while the team showed everyone around the heritage sites. “I have never knew about such temples and they are so old. The government should try to bring them to notice and try to boost tourism there,” said Nivedita Aggarwal, one of the participants.
