On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Odisha Tourism organised a

kite

flying

festival

at the Marine Drive Eco-Retreat in Konark, in association with Young Indians. The colourful event, named as

Uttarayana

Kite Fest, saw professional kite flyers from across the country gathered at the Puri-

Konark

Marine Drive to fly kites of various designs and shapes.

The sky on the beach was filled with colourful, designer and LED kites in the shape of whale, crab, star fish and many aquatic animals. Tourists, local people and guests, who have been staying in the tented accommodations at the newly set-up temporary Eco-Retreat, took part in the kite

flying

and kite making activities. To provide the visitors opportunity to fly kites, a kite shop was set up and kites were sold at Rs 30 and above. More importantly, the event was eco-friendly, as cotton threads were used instead of Chinese or glass

manjha

, which are harmful for the birds.

"The idea of Uttarayana Kite Fest sounded quite interesting and therefore, we decided to hold it there with the sea breeze helping in the event. It was great to see everyone actively participating in the event and enjoying themselves by the beach,’ said Vishal K. Dev, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Odisha Tourism.
