NSS Volunteers of the city step up to help migrant workers
It’s been since a month that thousands of migrant workers are fighting against the 40 degree Celsius heat and the dust storms to reach their home towns. With no money and no food the foot march to home is proving to be an extremely difficult one for them. But a ray of hope for them is the youngsters who are helping them on their way with food, clothes and first aid.
The volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) too are leaving no stone unturned to make the migrant workers comfortable in their journey back home. Volunteers in Bhopal, Indore, Khandawa, and Shivpuri etc are working in two shifts in the morning and evening for the people. A roadside Dhaba has been converted into a base for keeping all the stock like biscuits, bread, water, food packets, caps, and medicines etc and a stall has been setup in front of that so that people can come and fetch what they need. Open Unit’s program officer Rahul Singh Parihar shares, “Apart from all the aid we are distributing we are helping them understand the correct and the shortest route they can take to reach their destinations. We are helping a few board the correct trucks and buses which will take them much closer to their hometown. A few days ago a group of 40 Assamese workers passed by on cycles and that shook the souls of all of us working at that time.”
Keeping in mind the rising heat the volunteers are providing solutions for that to the people. “We have made kits of Sattu, sugar and water which will help in the hydration process. They can mix the both the items in the bottle and can continue drinking while walking. For kids we have kept the option of milk.” shares Manish Sonkar.
