IGRMS takes its rock art heritage online in this pandemic time

(IGRMS) launched new series to display online the exhibits under

the Rock Art Heritage Open Air Exhibition

Surrounded with hills from three sides and vast lake at one side nearly 200 acre premises of Manav Sangrahalaya has a chain of rock shelters in all three hilly areas and amongst them Shamla hill area just behind the Regional College is having as much as 11 painted rock shelters.
This part of exhibitions consist 175 painted figure of domestic animals like buffalo, cow, ox etc. wild animals like deer, boar, monkey, rhinosaur etc. and birds like peacock (in all 21 shelters). Shelter no. 22 and 21 itself consist nearly 45 anthropomorphic figures of male, female, man with bow and arrow and masked man etc which were counted by a documentation team.
Nearly 30 years back counted these figures gone fed and not easily identifiable but some are still very clear and can be identified and these paintings are very useful for suggesting life style of the early dwellers of this territory.
Dr. Praveen Kumar Mishra, Director, IGRMS said that, the main objective of this series is to highlight the aesthetic features of traditional lifestyles, local knowledge and culture’s continuing relevance with modern society. Opened in 9th decade of last century this exhibition has altogether 36 Rock shelters covered with natural vegetation. These shelters are not merely the asset of IGRMS but this heritage belongs to entire humanity and also serves as the field of interest for students and researchers of prehistory,

anthropology

, zoology and several other subjects.
