Play Kartoos- 1857 Kranti was recently staged at Shaheed Bhawan which talks about the wars of Independence that the Indians started against the British. Directed and written by Dinesh Nair this play showcased the atrocities of the British, people’s aggression and anger towards them, Nana Sahab’s meeting, heroic acts of Rani Laxmi Bai, and common people making fun of the British through sarcasm.

Apart from the movements and fights that this play talks about in the one and a half hour it also throws light on the unity of the Indians and how people from every region and community came forward to boycott the British. Dinesh Nair says that a year ago in Gwalior he thought of doing something like this. “There I read a book in which a drama troupe was mentioned who travelled from Gwalior to Jhansi making people aware about the happening sin the country. The way people talked, dressed up and behaved was carefully considered by my team and we tried our best to imitate that in 2019.” Adds Dinesh. Lecturer Geeta Singh who watched the play says, “Plays like these keep reminding us about the struggle of our ancestors and freedom fighters who gave up their lives so that we can be what we are today. There were times when I could feel goose bumps as the acting was so intense and realistic. The music I think played a major role in keeping the audience at the edge of their seats.”
