Barsha Mangal celebrates Santiniketan’s spirit in Kolkata

The cultural spirit of Santiniketan’s Barsha Mangal came alive in the city with an evening of music, dance, and artistic celebration at Rabindra Tirtha. Conceived as a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore’s timeless tradition, the festival unfolded on a stage imagined as a rain-soaked forest, where the essence of the monsoon was expressed through song, rhythm, and movement.
Apart from cultural activities by various artists, the evening also witnessed the unveiling of Uttarayana—a Santiniketan-inspired design initiative rooted in the art and craft heritage of Bengal.
Described as a continuation of Santiniketan’s legacy rather than mere recollection, Uttarayana seeks to reimagine craft for contemporary living spaces. It will bring forth objects, accents, and art that remain rooted in tradition while embracing modern design sensibilities—an effort to carry forward the vision of Tagore’s creative experiments for today’s India.
