To keep hockey alive, give players exposure early on: Poovanna CB
When a 23-year-old hockey player, Poovanna CB, steps onto the hockey turf, he is not only representing India but also carrying forward a family legacy. Born in Coorg, a region synonymous with coffee and hockey, Poovanna, who has been included in the 24-member national hockey team, is the latest in the long line of players who have turned Coorg into a district of champions. Excerpts from a chat with the hockey player, ahead of the India hockey team’s Australia tour.
‘DURING MY CHILDHOOD, I WANTED TO PLAY FOR MY FAMILY TEAM’
Poovanna tells us that his hockey journey began in Coorg, where the sport is a cultural festival. “When I was a kid, I just wanted to play for my family team. From playing in school tournaments in Virajpet to joining the Ashwini Sports Foundation, my teenage years were steeped in rigorous training. It shaped me into the player and person I am today,” he says.
‘IN COORG, HOCKEY IS STILL A MUCH CELEBRATED SPORT’
While cricket dominates headlines in India, hockey in Coorg continues to thrive. “People say the sport is fading, but in Coorg, it’s still strong. There are training camps, the Kodava Hockey Festival, and increased opportunities for young players to compete outside the district,” mentions Poovanna. “The key to keeping the tradition alive is giving players the resources and exposure they need early on. If we can connect Coorg’s raw talent with professional coaching, we’ll keep producing players for India,” he adds.
‘WE SHOULD HAVE MORE CONVERSATIONS WITH PLAYERS FROM OTHER SPORTS’
Recently, he and the Indian hockey team had a special interaction with a Pro Kabaddi League team from Gujarat, who were in Bengaluru for their pre-season preparations. He tells us that Indian sports need more crossover moments, where athletes from different disciplines meet, exchange stories, and share experiences. “We should have more conversations with players from other sports to learn about their journeys and challenges. It’s one way to get inspired and see the bigger picture beyond your sports,” he says.
