This is not just cinema, it’s a reminder of sacrifice, shares Roopa Iyer on Azad Bharath
Bengaluru-based actor-director Roopa Iyer is set to make her Hindi cinema debut with Azad Bharath, a film that is set to highlight the lesser-known chapters of India’s freedom struggle.
Roopa says the project emerged from an inner calling rather than a calculated decision. “I have been patriotic since childhood. My films, too, have consistently reflected social concerns. I don’t remember a specific moment when Azad Bharath came to me — it was the urge to speak about unsung heroes that had been buried deep inside,” she says.
The film centres on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s women’s armies, formed across seven countries, including India and its neighbouring regions. Roopa explains, “His personality fascinated me, as did the courage and zeal of young women who chose to fight for freedom at such a tender and naïve age.”
At the core of the story is Neera Arya, portrayed by Roopa herself. “She was a strong, independent woman who never gave up on life despite the abuse she endured. She lived on her own terms until her last breath,” she adds.
Describing Azad Bharath as more than a period drama, Roopa underscores its contemporary relevance. “This is not just cinema. It is a reminder of sacrifice, courage, and self-respect. The women of this army suffered unimaginable torture, yet lived with dignity. If they could remain strong in those times, we owe it to them to live responsibly today,” says Roopa.
Veteran actor Suresh Oberoi plays Chajju Ram, another unsung hero and Neera Arya’s father. Speaking about the casting, Roopa says, “He was impressed with the role. We didn’t even do a look test. I only sent him a reference picture, and he prepared thoroughly for the role,” reveals Roopa. With this film, Roopa hopes to honour forgotten heroes while urging today’s generation to reflect on values of courage, dignity, and responsibility.
How Shreyas Talpade became Netaji
Casting Shreyas Talpade as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was a conscious decision, says Roopa, adding, “I wanted a young and energetic Netaji. I considered many actors, but Shreyas felt like the right fit. She recalls that the actor was initially hesitant. “When I approached him, he asked me why I wanted him to play Netaji. I made him do a look test, and that’s when he began to believe in the role. There was something in his eyes and his voice that instantly connected with Netaji,” she says.
