The unexpected red theory in home decor
What is the viral unexpected red theory?
Coined by TikToker and interior designer Taylor Simon, the theory suggests that “adding anything that’s red, big or small, to a room where it doesn’t match at all automatically makes it look better.” She even argues that red should be considered a neutral colour because of how effortlessly it complements every palette.Adding an unexpected surprise element instantly lifts a neutral space. It adds drama without being loud. It’s bold, but controlled, personal, but not overpowering to any neutral design. The best part is, this can be implemented in any design style
A resurfaced trend
The unexpected red theory is not exactly a new trend — especially not in Indian homes where the colour is deeply embedded in cultural practices, festivals, and traditional decor, notes Neha Changwani, an interior designer from Mumbai. “Red has always symbolised luxury, power, and passion,” she says, on why even a small red element can pull a room together so effortlessly. “I have used this theory naturally for some projects and realised it worked, even before I came across the theory,” she adds.Intentionality with contrast
Red, though bold, can unify clashing elements in a space. It works equally well in minimalist interiors or maximalist setups, bringing a certain intentionality to the room. From lacquered red trays to rustic rugs, the smallest touch can shift a space from disconnected to cohesive. The trick is to place red in the most unassuming spot, says Ananya Bhattacharjee, interior designer. “Choose a piece of furniture or art that opens up into your living space - something your guests wouldn’t expect. That way, when it’s revealed, it creates a moment of surprise. A spark. A conversation starter. It’s a simple idea, but it adds a layer of personality that makes your home feel unlike anyone else’s.”Decor accessories
