Kalidasa’s Shakuntala is a story generations have grown up with, but Odyssey of Love reimagines the classic with striking modernity. Directed by Kevin Oliver, the original musical blends theatre, live music, dance, fashion and technology into a slick spectacle that often feels like a live concert unfolding on stage.

The production traces the love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta, from their passionate union to separation, longing and eventual reunion. But beyond the narrative, it is the staging that leaves the strongest impression. Artiste Raghava KK’s towering 45-ft veil becomes one of the evening’s most memorable visual elements, transforming the stage into a moving canvas. The lighting design and digital projections add richness without overwhelming the performers.

The music remains the production’s strongest pillar. Seamlessly blending Western arrangements with Indian classical influences, every song carries emotional weight. The dancers are exceptionally skilled, bringing precision and fluidity to the high-energy choreography. Rukmini Vijaykumar’s cameo adds grace and emotional depth.
Yet, despite its ambition and technical brilliance, the musical feels rushed. With over 21 scenes packed into just 60 minutes, several emotional moments pass too quickly to sink in fully. One leaves impressed, but also wishing that the journey had more room to breathe.
